LUCAS KENNI
Research and Technical Experience:
Lucas has gained extensive experience in sample preparation for LA-ICP-MS analysis, including gravimetric and magnetic separation and precise mounting in epoxy resin discs. His skill in preparing samples for U-Pb analysis has made him a sought-after collaborator for geologists across Brazil, including those from the Brazilian Geological Service (CPRM).
During his MSc, he worked in the X-ray Diffraction Laboratory and the Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory, where he learned to use U-Th-Pb Saturn software for U-Pb data reduction and an in-house Sm/Nd data reduction spreadsheet. He also designed tools to improve sample preparation efficiency, such as cutting devices to prevent resin leakage and tools for safely removing samples from glass mounts.
Skills and Interests:
He has a manual skill set in cutting and polishing minerals, a craft passed down from his father. This skill is valuable in both his academic research and his interest in the gem trade, where he aspires to engage in buying and selling gems. Lucas sees mineral fairs as opportunities to discover minerals that could serve as future reference materials for LA-ICP-MS analysis.
Current Research:
Lucas is pursuing his PhD at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, continuing his focus on isotopic methods and petrogenesis. His work is contributing to a deeper understanding of crustal evolution and the geochemical characteristics of pegmatites and related geological systems in South America.
His research and technical skills, combined with his passion for advancing isotope geochemistry, make Lucas a valuable contributor to the fields of geochronology, trace element analysis, and the study of pegmatite formations.
